DVA Imaging Services

DVA Imaging Services

Radiology Group is proud to support Australia’s veterans by providing DVA-funded diagnostic imaging services for eligible patients. If you hold a DVA Gold Card or White Card and have a valid referral, you may be able to access a range of imaging services with DVA billed directly, helping reduce out-of-pocket costs and making the process as simple as possible.

What is DVA Imaging?

DVA imaging refers to medical imaging services funded by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for eligible veterans and dependants. With the appropriate DVA card and referral, patients can access essential diagnostic scans to assist with diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of health conditions. At Radiology Group, we aim to deliver high-quality imaging with clear communication, respectful care, and minimal stress throughout your visit.

DVA Imaging Services We Offer

Eligible DVA patients may be able to access a wide range of imaging services, including:
  • X-ray
  • Ultrasound
  • CT (Computed Tomography)
  • MRI (eligibility and referral requirements apply)
  • Bone density (DEXA) (when clinically indicated)
  • Other diagnostic imaging services as required
Availability and funding depend on clinical indication, referral type, and DVA eligibility.

Important Update: DVA MRI Changes (Effective 1 January 2026)

From 1 January 2026, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs introduced updated imaging item numbers that expand access to certain DVA-funded MRI services. What’s changed?
  • Prior financial approval is no longer required for certain DVA-funded MRI scans
  • Eligible DVA patients may now access MRI services when referred by a medical specialist, provided the scan meets the relevant clinical and item criteria
  • MRI services must still align with the equivalent Medicare (MBS) descriptor and DVA requirements
These changes are designed to reduce delays, streamline access to care, and make the imaging process more efficient for veterans. If you’re unsure whether your MRI referral is covered, our team is happy to check eligibility before your appointment.

What You’ll Need

To ensure a smooth booking process, please have:
  • A valid referral (GP or specialist, depending on the scan)
  • Your DVA Gold or White Card
  • Any relevant previous imaging reports (if available)
Our reception team will help determine the most appropriate appointment and location for your scan. If the circumstances of your intended treatment do not meet the description of the new item number, DVA can still consider your request through the prior financial authorisation process. If you require prior financial authorisation, when submitting your request to DVA, please highlight the reason you are unable to utilise the new item number.
