What is DVA Imaging?
DVA imaging refers to medical imaging services funded by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for eligible veterans and dependants. With the appropriate DVA card and referral, patients can access essential diagnostic scans to assist with diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of health conditions. Eligible DVA patients may be able to access a wide range of imaging services, including:- X-ray
- Ultrasound
- CT (Computed Tomography)
- MRI (eligibility and referral requirements apply)
- Bone density (DEXA) (when clinically indicated)
- Other diagnostic imaging services as required
Important Update: DVA MRI Changes (Effective 1 January 2026)
From 1 January 2026, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs introduced updated imaging item numbers that expand access to certain DVA-funded MRI services. What’s changed?- Prior financial approval is no longer required for certain DVA-funded MRI scans
- Eligible DVA patients may now access MRI services when referred by a medical specialist, provided the scan meets the relevant clinical and item criteria
- MRI services must still align with the equivalent Medicare (MBS) descriptor and DVA requirements

To ensure a smooth booking process, please have:- A valid referral (GP or specialist, depending on the scan)
- Your DVA Gold or White Card
- Any relevant previous imaging reports (if available)
